Hi everybody! Here's a new release of my roguelike game, "Peculiar Voyage: Escape from Cute".
It's been a while since I posted the demo to the PAlib forum back in April.

Check out some new videos at
http://www.youtube.com/espectraa1s

Here's the link:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/2gjty1mlway/PVescape2.zip

In this new version (0.2) I've added:

- a 30-floor bonus dungeon (with herbs, scrolls and beads unidentified), unlocked after clearing the main dungeon.
- monster item drops.
- new items and monsters (vials, and 3 new pouch types, a few new herbs, scrolls and
a new weapon, Bumble and Catapult monster families).
- working gamestate saves for NO$GBA (in the April 09 version saves only worked on DS hardware).
- a strategy dungeon (single floor mini-dungeons to teach various techniques)
- a warehouse to store your valuable items.
- a funky (and probably totally unbalanced) "VialTrial" dungeon where you'll find lots of
empty vials to use against monsters.

Known bugs:

- setting the music volume in the Settings menu is messed up. It changes both the music AND the
sound fx volume, but should only adjust the music.

Controls
--------

Keys are almost the same as the Mystery Dungeon Shiren games. (I apologize
ahead of time if these are confusing. They are copying the Shiren games
which makes it easy for a Mystery Dungeon fan, but may take a while to
get the hang of for a non-Mystery Dungeon player.)

A button:
attack monsters or talk to NPCs (in the menu system A confirms menu selections).

B button:
tapped and released quickly, will bring up the menu system for using items in the inventory.
B held while hitting D-pad will make the character run down a corridor or across a room (until
something "interesting" is encountered).
Holding B when next to a friendly character while using the D-pad to move "into" the character
will let the player swap spaces (for when the friendly character is blocking the way!)
The B button is also used to back out of menus or the Rankings page, Menagerie, etc.
Finally, press and hold B and also A to pass a turn without moving (useful when there are no monsters
around and you need to restore your HP).

L shoulder button:
shoot equipped projectiles with a slingshot, or use a monster's special attack while "possessed"
by the monster's soul (after drinking a vial).

R shoulder button:
hold it to restrict the character's movement to diagonals.

X button:
brings up a status menu (for saving the game, showing the player's attack and defense power
or setting sound volume -- see note above about a known sound volume bug).

Y button:
hold it while pressing the D-pad to change directions the character is facing without moving and
using a turn. Tap the Y button in the inventory menu to sort the inventory items.

This game looks so awesome!
The graphics are so polished and cute Cheesy, keep up the good work!
Environment looks very good, nice textures!

What is the "mini-map" with the following-crow on the upper screen, and what does it do? is it an overall map?

I can only suggest to try and use another font... not really a problem, but it would be good for the theme (cute  Tongue) like a more fat, or "gummy" (fatter like bold and round... no edges). Perhaps a ordering system for the items... or classify them in different tabs.

Overall a great game: 3.5/5  :Smiley

Thanks for the comments, Sethirion!

Unfortunately, that "overworld" map on the top screen doesn't do much of anything.
The crow will move forward a little with each floor you advance in the dungeon, and if
your HP gets down low, he'll say "watch out!", etc. in a comment bubble. Each
dungeon only has a couple of different backgrounds that show up on the top screen -- it'll
change after several floors in the dungeon.  Eventually, I'll try to make better use of the top
screen.

The graphics I borrowed from "Danc's Prototyping Graphics" (his website is
called Lost Garden) are probably the polished looking ones. The more
amateur looking graphics are my doing...  Wink

I've been considering moving to an 8x16 pixel font (or bigger) to give more
possibilities.

Thanks for the advice!

That video looks amazing. I'll have to give this a try - I enjoy roguelikes.

Yeah, give the game a try!

I'd be very interested to know how far players can get - to have a feel for whether
I got the balance right or not.  But if you play a lot of roguelikes, you'll probably breeze
through it.

Maybe we can even follow the mystery dungeon tradition of posting about funny deaths. Grin

Thanks Programix!

I've been tweaking the balance in the bonus dungeon, so I could probably
drop a slightly updated version in the near future.

Also, the method for unlocking the VialTrial dungeon is a little obscure, so let
me know if you need a hint on how to do it.

Really great game!!!
Downloaded it two days ago and can't stop playing it!!!
The only problem I have is, that after I've been killed I've got no items and have to do the Training Ground again to not be fought by the first enemies...

Keep on doing such great work!

s_hansse

Edit: How long did you need for coding this great game???

My words of advice:
  • Upgrade to the latest PAlib/devkitARM/libnds/etc (go read the Wiki).
  • Use Maxmod to play your .mod files (they have to be preconverted beforehand into the Maxmod soundbank format).
  • Don't embed your savefile in the .nds file, put it in /data/escape_from_cute/ or similar.
Other than that, nice job Smiley

Wow, I thought this thread (and interest in the game) had died long ago.

Thanks for the encouragement, s_hansse!  I spent about 3 months in the winter of 2008 on the game, and then about 8 months in 2009.  Probably some of the happiest months of my life.

I've been off in another realm (Android) working on a game, trying to help my "under-employment"... (see http://www.peculiar-games.com/).  But I kind of miss PAlib/DS development -- the guaranteed framerate, MOD file support, etc.

That's probably good advice, fincs.  I'll try to incorporate it when I get back to Escape from Cute.
